All eligible study members and their teachers were contacted: 4,127 teachers of cohort members responded and 4,100 study members completed postal questionnaires.

Data collection

The study member’s teacher completed the postal questionnaire assessing the child’s attainment, attitude to school work, behaviour and habits, and gave information on school absence.

Study members completed the postal questionnaire about aspirations and interests, and the questions comprising the Pintner Personality Inventory1)
