Data collection
Health visitors collected information from health records and interviewed mothers at home about the health and home and family circumstances of the mother and baby. Health visitors also made assessments of maternal care and home circumstances.
Maternal reports of hospital admissions were checked with hospital records.
Training for data collection
Instructions are given at the head of each form.
